Skiing in Kranjska Gora

Kranjska Gora is a small but perfectly formed ski resort in the Julian Alps in north-west Slovenia, close to the borders with Italy and Austria. There are 20 km of slopes spread over 18 runs to enjoy, most of which are blue and red. The resort is also well-equipped for other pursuits such as snowboarding.

The resort’s lifts and runs are located across the slopes of Vitranc from the town of Kranjska Gora to Planica and are set at altitudes ranging from 800 m (resort level) to 1,215 m, with some runs cutting through trees. Although the slopes are at a relatively low altitude, snowmaking makes up for any variable snowfall. There are 18 lifts in total: 5 chairlifts and 13 drag lifts.

Much of the accommodation in Kranjska Gora is only separated from the slopes by a snowy ‘beach’, making it easy to get from your lodgings on to the run of your choice. Further skiing is available in Mojstrana and Rateče.

Expert skiers will want to tackle the Podkoren trail, which is used by top skiers each year in competition for the Vitranc Trophy in the World Cup men’s giant slalom and slalom races.

Cross-country skiers can enjoy 40 km of trails in and around the resort. One particularly challenging trail takes skiers on a 260 m ascent from Rateče to Tamar. It’s also possible to go cross-country skiing at night.

Some off-piste skiing is available, although this is really only recommended with the assistance of a guide.
